Volleyball Team Falls To FIU In Season Opener

STATESBORO, Ga. - Three Dolphin volleyball players recorded double-digit kill totals, but it was not enough as Florida International defeated Jacksonville 15-12, 15-9, 13-15, 17-15, Friday evening at the Georgia Southern Invitational.

Senior middle hitter Brooke Jackson (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), a transfer from Furman University, led the way with 14 kills, nine digs and seven total blocks. Junior outside hitter Carrie Arago (Orlando, Fla.), the 1999 TAAC Player of the Year, was next with 13 kills, six digs and three service aces, while sophomore Brooke Ahrens (Benson, Ill.) finished with 12 kills.

Freshmen Kelly Ryals (Gainesville, Fla.) and Radka Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) had solid games in their first collegiate action. Ryals tied Jackson for team-high dig honors with nine while also tallying six kills and three blocks. Dimitrova, meanwhile, had a match-high seven block assist to go with five kills and seven digs.

Adriana Fundora had a match-high 15 kills, followed by Nirvana Kos with 13 and Jennifer Owens with 12. Kos led all players with 23 digs.

The Dolphins return to action on Saturday when they continue tournament play against host Georgia Southern at 1 p.m.
