PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Jacksonville University volleyball team ran its winning streak to three when the Dolphins won a pair of matches during the final day of competition at the Brown University Volleyball Tournament, defeating St. Peter's 3-1, before emerging victorious over host Brown, 3-0.
The wins improve JU to 5-4 on the year as the Dolphins sport a winning record for the first time during the 2000 season. Senior Tiffany Twaddle (Dallas, Texas) and freshman Radka Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) earned all-tournament honors as they helped JU win three of its four matches during the weekend tournament.
The Dolphins opened Saturday's competition with a win over St. Peter's, defeating the Peahens, 15-2, 8-15, 20-18, 15-11. Dimitrova led five JU players with double-digit kill totals with 19 while Twaddle paced the squad with 15 digs. Freshman Kelly Ryals (Gainesville, Fla.) was next on the kills list with 15 while sophomore Brooke Ahrens (Benson, Ill.) had 14 to go along with Twaddle's 12 and senior Jessica Windell's (Newport, Ore.) 10. Windell also had 13 digs with Dimitrova and Ryals logging 11 and 10, respectively.
Dimitrova led the way, once again, in the Dolphins' second match of the day as JU defeated host Brown University, 15-11, 15-11, 15-8. The freshman had 13 kills while fellow rookie Ryals paced the team with 14 digs.
During the match against the Bears, JU hit .240 as a team and held Brown to just .070. The Bears did not hit better than .075 in any game during the match as the Dolphins forced Brown into 30 attack errors while committing only 18 of their own.
The Dolphins return to action on Saturday, Sept. 23 when they play host to Coastal Carolina at 2:30 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium.
