Volleyball Opens TAAC Play With A 3-1 Win Over FAU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman outside hitter Radka Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) had a match-high 17 kills and a .667 hitting percentage to lead the Jacksonville University volleyball to its sixth-straight victory, defeating Florida Atlantic 3-1 to open TAAC play Friday night in Swisher Gymnasium.

With the win, JU improved to 8-4 (1-0 in the TAAC) as the Dolphins remain undefeated at home. The loss dropped FAU to 4-13 on the year and 1-2 in league play.

The red-hot streak the Dolphins developed during its previous five wins continued early in the contest as JU won game one decisively with a 15-2 victory. In the game, the Dolphins hit .550 and did not commit a hitting error while holding FAU to a minus-.143 attack percentage. JU cooled somewhat in the second game, but played well enough to take a two-game lead into intermission with a 15-9 win.

The Owls, however, would not go away and put up a convincing 15-3 win in game three. This time, it was FAU with the great hitting - .391 attack percentage with 11 kills and only two errors - while JU struggled attacking the ball.

On the momentum of the game-three win, FAU came out on fire early in game four and took a 4-0 lead. But the Dolphins would respond with eight unanswered points, and would outscore the Owls 7-4 the rest of the way for the match-clinching 15-8 win.

Junior Carrie Arago (Orlando, Fla.) played a big part in the win with 11 kills and a team-best 13 digs to go with a match-high five service aces. Junior Carrie Bosworth (Centerville, Mass.) also had a solid performance with a match-high three blocks and 40 assists to go with five kills and six digs.

Ashley Bodily led the Owls with 15 kills and 13 digs in the loss.

The Dolphins return to action on Friday, Oct. 6 when they travel to Alabama to take on TAAC foe Jacksonville State at 8 p.m. JU will continue its two-match Alabama road swing with a contest in Birmingham vs. Samford at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
