Oct. 7, 2000

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior setter Carrie Bosworth (Centerville, Mass.) had a triple-double, but it was not enough as the Jacksonville University volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 match to Samford Saturday afternoon.

Bosworth finished with 49 assists and 10 digs to go with a team-best 16 kills. The loss to the Bulldogs snaped JU's seven-match winning streak as the Dolphins fall to 9-5 on the year and 2-1 in conference action. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, improve to 9-11 for the season and 1-1 in TAAC play.

Other JU players with double-digit kill totals were Carrie Arago (Orlando, Fla.) with 15 and Brooke Jackson (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Jessica Windell (Newport, Ore.) with 10 each. Radka Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) led the team in digs with 19 while Arago had 15 and Tiffany Twaddle (Dallas, Texas) had 13.

JU started the match off with a bang and raced out to a 7-0 lead in game one. That momentum would carry them throughout the first two contests, with convincing 15-6 and 15-8 wins.

Momentum would swing to the other side of the court after game two, however, as Samford caught fire and could not be extinguished. The Bulldogs took an early 2-0 lead in game three and never looked back en route to a 15-3 win.

JU took an early 2-0 lead in game four, but it would be short lived as Samford would tie the score at 3-3 and cruise to a 15-9 victory to force a game five.

In the rally scoring period, the Dolphins appeared to settle down and took a 3-0 lead to open the contest. JU led by three at 8-5, but once again the Bulldogs roared back and tied the game at 10-10. It was back-and-forth the rest of the way, but Samford would complete its comeback with a 3-1 rally at the end of the game for a 15-13 victory.

Whitney Miller led the Bulldog attack with a career-high 24 kills to go with 19 assists in the victory. Other Samford players with double-digit kill totals were Shellie Oldhouse with 16, Angela Smith with 15 and Stefanie Pickett with 11.

The Dolphins return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 10 when they travel to DeLand, Fla., to take on TAAC foe Stetson at 7 p.m. The next home match for the Dolphins is on Friday, Oct. 13 when JU plays host to UCF in a non-conference matchup at 7:30 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium.
