Volleyball Sweeps TAAC Foe Troy State, 3-0

TROY, Ala. - Junior outside hitter Carrie Arago (Orlando, Fla.) recorded her 11th double-double of the 2000 season as the Jacksonville University volleyball team defeated TAAC rival Troy State, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Trojan Arena.

Arago tallied 21 kills and 17 digs in the victory as the Dolphins recorded a .272 attack percentage (57 kills, 16 errors, 151 attempts) while holding the Trojans to a .071 clip (36 kills, 25 errors, 155 attempts).

The win snapped a two-match losing skid for JU as the Dolphins improve to 14-10 overall and 5-3 in league activity. Troy State, meanwhile, fell to 19-9 on the season and 3-5 in the TAAC.

Senior middle hitter Brooke Jackson (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) also finished with a double-digit kills total with 10 while four Dolphins finished with 10-or-more digs. Freshman outside hitter Kelly Ryals (Gainesville, Fla.) led all players with 22 digs, followed by Arago, senior middle hitter Tiffany Twaddle (Dallas, Texas) with 11 and senior outside hitter Juanita Barb (Sarasota, Fla.) with 10.

The Dolphins opened the match scoring the first four points before cruising to a 15-7 win in game one. Game two began with Troy State jumping out to a 2-0 lead, but JU came back to win the second stanza, 15-7. Game three was a back-and-forth battle, as JU held a 9-8 lead. But the Dolphins would go on a 6-1 run to end the match en route to a 15-9 victory.

TSU's Erika VanHootegem led the Trojans with eight kills. Emily Larson had 18 digs, and Amy Kellog chipped in with four service aces. Andrea Ellisor and Rachel Hassan added 12 digs apiece.

JU returns to action when the Dolphins travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., to take on Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
