Aug. 28, 2007

Remembering past accomplishments and setting goals for the future were the themes of the JU Athletics Department as over 400 student-athletes attended the 2007-08 Student-Athlete "Welcome Back" Ice Cream Social at the newly constructed Negaard Rowing Center Tuesday evening.

Each student-athlete received an "Athletes Supporting Athletes" t-shirt and was served cold drinks and ice cream before going over NCAA mandatory regulations to signify the start of the 2007-08 season.

Speaking during the event were Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president Louisa Ward, vice president Matt Dobbins and JU director of athletics Alan Verlander, while senior vice president for Academic Affairs Dr. Lois Becker spoke on behalf of JU president Kerry Romesburg. Several members of the JU Athletics Department and coaches were also in attendance.

"The NCAA requires us to speak to the student-athletes about certain topics at the beginning of the school year but I enjoy getting everyone together and welcoming them back to campus," Verlander said. "As a department, we wanted to celebrate the success of the past season while looking forward to a new year."

Last season, the Dolphins won five Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, three state championships in rowing and six teams made an appearance in the NCAA postseason. JU student-athletes also capped of the academic campaign with a 3.03 overall cumulative GPA.

Individually, 159 JU student-athletes earned a grade point average of 3.0 or better during the academic year. The Dolphins also had 64 student athletes earn Dean's List distinctions and five student-athletes garnered President's Honor Roll accolades with a 4.0.
