July 20, 2006
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Mike Hartley, a longtime supporter of JU athletics and a well-respected businessman, has taken over as chairman of the JU Athletic Association, the official booster club of JU athletics.
"Mike is a man of great character and has so much respect in the community. We are proud for him to serve as our chairman and lead the efforts of the JUAA board," said director of athletics Alan Verlander. "Mike was a strong leader last year as chairman of the Gator Bowl Association and we are thrilled to be working with him to lead JU Athletics into this new year."
Hartley joined his family business, Hartley Press, in 1963 and has helped oversee its growth into the largest commercial printing company in North Florida, employing more than 110 people.
His ties to the community run deep as he has served on numerous boards including The Help Center, Leukemia Society, The Red Cross, Dreams Come True, Deliver the Dream, The Rita Foundation, FCCJ Foundation Board and Jacksonville Country Day School. He is a past chairman of the Players Championship and last year's chairman of the Gator Bowl Association.
"I am honored to serve as this year's chairman of the JUAA," Hartley said. "I'm personally involved because I know how important JU is to our community. The board is dedicated to supporting JU athletics and to help JU return to the national prominence it once enjoyed. We have witnessed some exciting changes recently and are confident that JU is on the way to fielding competitive teams in every sport."
Joining Hartley on the JUAA Board for the 2006-07 year will be Jim Dalton, Past Chair of the JUAA; Jerry Bussell, Chair-Elect; Mark Usdin, Ticket Drive Chair; and Fred Pruitt, Advisory Board Representative. The JUAA Board consists of 39 members and works to actively raise funds for JU Athletics through memberships to the JUAA, season ticket drives and the Mystery Dinner Fundraiser. Last year, the board raised more than $400,000 for JU Athletics.
