A letter from JU Director of Athletics Alan Verlander
It is hard to believe that I have been here at JU for two years! These have been the most enjoyable years of my professional career because we are building something special here. With another academic year passing, we have seen the athletic programs at Jacksonville University continue to grow - by winning the right way.
The progress has been evident on the field, in the classroom, in the community and in upgrades to facilities. This year, we claimed five Atlantic Sun Conference titles, three state championships in rowing and were represented by six teams in the NCAA Regionals.
After having 10 teams not reaching the benchmark set forth by the NCAA in the Academic Progress Rate a year ago, was had 14 of the 18 varsity teams improve their APR as a result of a concerted effort with the coaching staffs of each program and our athletic administration.
The 2006-07 academic year witnessed the construction of the new 15,000-square foot rowing center on the banks of the St. Johns River, the dedication of the baseball stadium to longtime supporter and JU alum John Sessions, the dedication of the tennis complex to the Keith Watson family and the highly anticipated return of the basketball team to the Downtown area.
But one of the things that I have been most proud of this year is the efforts of our student-athletes and coaches in contributing and volunteering to our community. Page two will detail all of their efforts, but our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has become a shining beacon throughout the campus and an example for the rest of the JU community.
That brings us back to the words - "winning the right way." As each year passes, my goal is for all of our teams to continue to improve in all phases - on the field, in the classroom and in the community. As we do this, we are committed to building a program with integrity and honor.
I also want to take a moment to thank all of our supporters and sponsors whose generous contributions have helped make an impact on the Jacksonville University community and enabled the athletic programs to excel. Without your investments into our programs, we would not have been able to attain the level of success that we reached this year. You deserve a great deal of this credit too!
The future for JU Athletics is bright and I look forward to seeing you soon!
