Football reports for preseason camp on Aug. 6
Aug. 1, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville football team will assemble for its first fall camp under new head coach Kerwin Bell on Monday, August 6.
While the first day is the hum-drum of paperwork, physicals and getting checked in to the dorms, it's a whirlwind as the Dolphins hit the field the next day for their first practice.
The fall begins with three weeks of preseason camp before getting into game preparation mode for the season opener at Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 1.
"We're excited to get the team together and hit the field for practice," Bell said. "The first day of camp is always an exciting time for the guys as they prepare for the season ahead.
"We have one goal that we want to attain and it starts from day one. I'm anxious to get this group out on the field to see where we've improved in summer workouts and how far we have to go to reach our goals."
The Dolphins have 105 players reporting for camp, with 11 seniors leading the group. The offense will feature five of that group - quarterback Chris Horton, receivers Michael Jenner and Nate Conner, tight end Charles Lusk and lineman David Locander.
"This senior class has a lot of experience which puts them in a leadership position to guide our younger players as they develop and adjust to college life," Bell said. "We threw a lot at them in the spring and they handled it well. We're going to take the momentum we built in the spring to hit the ground running this fall."
The Dolphins will have three scrimmages in the preseason camp, with all three coming on Saturdays to develop continuity throughout the season. The first scrimmage is scheduled for Aug. 11 with the final two scheduled for Aug. 18 and 25.
"When we begin preparing for Bethune-Cookman on Aug. 28, I want these guys to know what is expected of them as we prepare for an opponent," Bell said. "Every game is important and you have to prepare for each game that way."
