Dolphins open fall camp on Tuesday
Aug. 7, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The first fall practice for JU commenced on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., with the Dolphins working out for two and a half hours in helmets and shorts as they go through the NCAA mandated acclimation period before being able to go in full pads.
With temperatures soaring as high as 110 on the field, the first practice served more as a walk-through and an installation session, with some 11-on-11 plays towards the end. Both the offense and defense did a lot of teaching as the new players were given their first opportunity on the field after last night's team meeting and the position meetings in the morning.
"It was really hot out here today, but I like how we performed," JU head coach Kerwin Bell said. "We had a great commitment from our guys who stayed this summer to work out and it has paid off because I really like where we are athletically."
The ideal offensive attack for Bell is a passing attack that sets up the run, enabling the Dolphins to pick up big chunks of yardage at any time.
"We want to be balanced, with a power running game and an accurate passing attack," Bell said. "We're not just going to throw the ball on every down, we're going to see what the defense gives us and attack it as best we can."
The defense under Ron McCrone's direction is poised for a breakout season with a stellar secondary.
"Our job is to get the ball back as soon as we can," McCrone said. "We're going to be physical, tough and ready to go all-out on every down."
