Dolphins gear up for full pads on Saturday
Aug. 10, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville football team wrapped up its first week of practice Friday afternoon in preparation for its first day in full pads on Saturday.
The Dolphins first full pad workout comes Saturday morning at 10 a.m., as they suit up for their first of three scrimmages in fall camp.
"The scrimmages are a good gauge of how much we've accomplished and how far we've got to go," said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. "I know the guys are excited to get into full pads for the first time in camp."
The scrimmages also serve as a great opportunity for the coaching staff to evaluate the players and see who can fill what roles.
"There are a lot of guys that we know can do a lot of things for us," Bell said. "The scrimmage allows us to evaluate the kids on how they handle their assignments and what they do best. Our job after is to find the best way to use their talents to help this team win a Pioneer Football League championship."
The scrimmage is open to the public and will last approximately two hours.
PRACTICE REPORT: The Dolphins worked out for two hours on Friday, going out in shorts for the last time before strapping the full pads on Saturday morning.
The offense continued to put the ball in the air a lot, with the quarterbacks continuing to develop a rhythm with the offensive line and receivers.
"It's been a learning process, but we're coming along," said senior quarterback Chris Horton. "We've got a lot of young guys still learning the scheme and when one person makes a mistake, the whole unit goes down. We're getting better and there is a lot of talent, we've just got to become one group working together every play."
Defensively, the Dolphins continued to work a lot of players into the mix to get some experience and to see who will be playmakers this year.
"The defense is coming together pretty well," said senior defensive back Bryan Flowers. "We've got some new guys adjusting to the new scheme and we've had a lot thrown at us, but we're picking it up quickly. The first team is starting to gel and play at level that we've never played before, but we've got to keep working to get better."
