Football falls on the road to Dayton, 49-3
Oct. 6, 2007
DAYTON, Ohio - Big plays early got Dayton off to a fast start as the Flyers handed the JU football team its second straight loss to open Pioneer Football League play, 49-3.
Dayton (5-1, 1-1 PFL) got an amazing outing from quarterback Kevin Hoyng, who completed 15-of-22 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for another in just three quarters of action.
The 46-margin was the largest margin ever for the Dolphins (1-4, 0-2 PFL), breaking the previous record of 43 set in a 55-12 loss to Florida International in 2003. The loss was the fourth straight for JU in conference play dating back to the end of last season.
"We're not a confidence football team right now," said JU head coach Kerwin Bell. "We've gone through a lot of stuff in the past two weeks and its affected the psyche of this team. We're going to forget about the first five games and start over next week."
Dayton piled up 518 yards of total offense, with 337 coming from the passing attack. The Dolphins offense struggled, gaining just 10 first downs on 184 yards.
Erik Stepelton led JU by completing 9-of-22 passing for 99 yards. Rudell Small led the rushing attack with 14 yards on eight carries. Ray Scott was the leading receiver for JU with five catches for 47 yards.
The Flyers put 21 points on the board in the first quarter, all coming in the final nine minutes. Hoyng connected with Nick Ruhe from 9-yards out for his first touchdown of the game.
After a JU punt, the Flyers went back to the aerial attack as Hoyng connected with Justin Watkins on a 37-yard pass on the first play of the drive to put UD up 14-0.
Hoyng ended his magnificent first quarter with a 12-yard run, capping a three-play, 92-yard drive that was setup by a 78-yard pass from Hoyng to Michael Jonard.
Hoyng and Jonard hooked up again to start the second quarter, this time a 30-yard touchdown play, giving the Flyers a 28-0 lead.
Dayton ended its phenomenal first half with its fifth touchdown on a 5-yard run by Joe Gulick with 3:53 left in the half.
JU finally ended a streak of 69 minutes without a point on Michael Zacco's 30-yard field goal with 10:15 left in the third quarter, capping an eight-play, 40 yard drive.
Dayton answered with Gulick scoring on a 15-yard run with 3:54 left in the third quarter to put the Flyers on top 42-3.
The Flyers put the final points of the day up on a 21-yard run by Bo Balogun, providing the 49-3 margin.
The Dolphins return home for Homecoming against Morehead State on Saturday. Kickoff is set for Noon at D.B. Milne Field.
