Baseball Loses Slugfest to Connecticut, 13-12

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU sophomore Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) had a triple, a home run and three RBI, while freshman Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a pair of doubles, a triple and two RBI, but Connecticut overcame a two-run deficit in the final inning with three runs in the ninth to win, 13-12, Tuesday night at Alexander Brest Field.

Senior Clint Hart (Jacksonville/Paxon) added a pair of hits, 2 RBI and was hit by a pitch twice, while senior Larry Best-Berfet (Newark, N.J.) extended his hitting streak to 11 games, while recording his A-Sun-leading 12th and 13th stolen base.

JU evens its record at 8-8, while Connecticut improves to 2-5 on the season.

The Dolphins led 12-10 in the ninth inning with one out and men on second and third when UConn's Matt Untiet doubled in a run, making it 12-11 Dolphins, and the next batter was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Dave Tokarz stepped up to the plate and hit a shot back at the pitcher, Ashley Roque (Jacksonville/Bolles) but an error by catcher Jon Galui (Palm Beach, Fla.) allowed the tying run to score, making it 12-12. Freshman reliever Shaun Kapples (Jacksonville/Paxon) threw one pitch and then promptly picked off the runner at first base, followed by Brickle gunning down the runner headed for home to end the inning.

Senior Joe Steward (Ottawa, Kan.) drew a two-out walk in the ninth, but that was all the Dolphins could muster against Connecticut's closer.

Roque (0-2) picked up the loss, while UConn's Joe Smeraglino (2-0) earned the Huskies a victory.

The Dolphins return to action tomorrow when they host the Illinois State Redbirds at 6 p.m. at Alexander Brest Field.
