Kyle DeVries Pitches Baseball to 5-3 Victory Over Illinois State
March 10, 2004
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Kyle DeVries (Holland, Mich.) pitched a complete game three-hitter, allowing no earned runs while striking out 10, while sophomore Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) had his second triple in as many nights and scored two runs as the Dolphins downed Illinois State, 5-3, Wednesday night at Alexander Brest Field.
DeVries improved to 1-2 with his 9.0 inning masterpiece, holding Illinois State without a hit through the final three innings, while recording five strikeouts through the final three frames. DeVries set career-highs in innings pitched and strikeouts, while pitching his first complete game. Illinois State's Nick Schauff fell to 0-1 on the season, allowing three hits and four runs in 5.0 innings of work.
Illinois State scored two runs in the first off of Dolphin miscues and added another unearned run in the fifth inning to lead 3-0. The Dolphins loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth when junior Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.) and Brickle drew RBI walks to bring JU within one, trailing 3-2. Illinois State recorded the first out of the inning until McHugh scored on a passed ball, moving Brickle to third, and senior Orlando Diaz (Downers Grove, Ill.) hit his third sac fly of the season, making it 4-3 Dolphins.
DeVries took charge from there, holding the Redbirds hitless through the final three innings while striking out two in the seventh, two in the eighth and one in the ninth. Brickle tripled and scored an insurance run on Diaz's RBI single in the seventh inning to give JU a 5-3 cushion.
The Dolphins return to Friday and Saturday when they travel to Georgia State to take on the Panthers in a three-game series. The first game begins Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a Saturday double-header that gets underway at 1 p.m.
