Feb. 7, 2004
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Junior RHP Dennis Robinson (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) threw seven shutout innings, striking out four and allowing six hits, while senior OF Clint Hart (Jacksonville, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with a triple and the game-winning run as the Dolphins downed Bethune-Cookman, 5-0, in the season opener Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The shutout victory is JU's first since May 5, 2002 when the Dolphins blanked Stetson, 2-0.
Robinson allowed just one runner to advance past second base.
JU took the lead for good in the third when Hart tripled to left center with one out and scored on a passed ball to put the Dolphins ahead, 1-0. JU added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth when senior OF Larry Best-Berfet (Newark, N.J.) drew a one-out walk and Hart singled to put men on the corners. Junior 2B Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.) hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Best-Berfet, and junior catcher Alex Jamieson (Sarasota, Fla.) doubled in Hart to make it 3-0.
JU added two runs in the eighth when sophomore 1B Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) and senior 3B Orlando Diaz (Downers Grove, Ill.) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Bethune-Cookman recorded the first out of the inning before walking senior OF Rob Hudson (Garden City, Mich.) and loading the bases for Tom Alford (Jacksonville, Fla.). Alford was hit by a pitch, scoring Gronkowski, and Best-Berfet hit a sacrifice fly to score Diaz.
JU hosts Bethune-Cookman tomorrow at 1 p.m. in its home opener at Alexander Brest Field.
