Baseball Wins Comeback Thriller Against Bethune-Cookman, 7-6

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - junior catcher Alex Jamieson (Sarasota, Fla.) went 2-for-3, including a two-out game-winning single in the eighth as the Dolphins rallied for a comeback win over Bethune-Cookman, 7-6, Sunday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field. Jamieson added a triple, a walk, two runs and a hit-by-pitch to the stat sheet.

Trailing 6-5 in the eighth, freshman Pete Clifford (Jacksonville, Fla.) singled in his first collegiate at-bat and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before the Wildcats recorded the second out of the inning. Junior Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.) lashed a two-out double to left center, scoring Clifford, and recorded the game-winning run after Jamieson's clutch single.

The win gives JU (2-0) the series sweep, while Bethune-Cookman (0-2) drops its second in a row. JU trailed Bethune-Cookman, 5-3, in the fifth when an error put McHugh on first with one-out and Jamieson tripled down the right field line, scoring one. Sophomore Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) drew a walk, and senior Orlando Diaz (Downers Grove, Ill.) singled to score Jamieson.

Junior RHP D.J. Kaercher (Clearwater, Fla.) pitched 1.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts to earn the win, while junior RHP Brett Nagy (Jacksonville, Fla.) threw 4.2 innings in his first start of the season, allowing five runs and striking out four. Junior RHP Chris Kelly (Sarasota, Fla.) closed out the ninth, retiring the side and earning the first save of his career.

JU visits Florida State on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. at Dick Howser Stadium, before returning home to Alexander Brest Field on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. for the second game with the Seminoles. Sunday's game will be broadcast on "The Winner" AM 970 with the Dolphin Pregame Show beginning at 1:45 p.m.
