Baseball Loses to Western Michigan, 5-3, in Series Finale

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU senior Larry Best-Berfet (Newark, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with three steals, while freshman Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) had a pair of hits and one RBI but Western Michigan scored three runs in the seventh inning to cap a come-from-behind victory in the series finale, winning, 5-3, Wednesday night at Alexander Brest Field.

JU drops to 7-5, ending a four-game winning streak, while Western Michigan improves to 2-4.

The Dolphins led 2-1 in the seventh when Justin Carter rapped a one-out bases-loaded single through the left side, scoring two runs and making it 3-2 Western Michigan. A throwing error led to the third and final Bronco run of the inning, giving the Western Michigan a 4-2 cushion.

Best-Berfet hit safely in his first three at-bats and recorded a steal with each on-base appearance, giving him nine stolen bases this season. Lefthanded reliever Patrick Sitkins (Ft. Myers, Fla.) (1-1) was saddled with the loss, while Western Michigan's Dan Coberley (2-0) earned the victory.

Senior Clint Hart (Jacksonville/Paxon) scored senior Orlando Diaz (Downers Grove, Ill.) in the bottom half of the seventh to cut the deficit to 4-3, but Western Michigan added an insurance run in the eighth while limiting the Dolphins to one hit through the final two innings.

The Dolphins begin Atlantic Sun play on Saturday, March 6 when they take on Belmont in a conference doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Alexander Brest Field. The teams wrap up their three-game set on Sunday at 1 p.m.
