Baseball Loses to the Long Ball Against Belmont, 5-2 and 4-3

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Larry Best-Berfet (Newark, N.J.) led the Dolphins with four hits, including a double and a triple, while recording a stolen base but Belmont relied on the long ball in the conference-opening doubleheader, scoring all of its runs off homers to win 5-2 and 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field. Junior Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.) had three hits and one RBI in the two-game set, while freshman Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) had a pair of hits and two runs.

The losses even JU at 7-7 and drop them to 0-2 in the conference, while Belmont improves to 11-2 and 2-0 in the Atlantic Sun.

Senior Rob Hudson (Garden City, Mich.) rallied the Dolphins from a run down in the eighth inning of the second game when he singled to left field, scoring McHugh and making it 3-3. The Bruins added a solo home run in the ninth to pull ahead by one and JU stranded a man on first in their final at-bats.

In the first game, the Bruins used leadoff solo home runs in the first and second to lead 2-1, before Dan Soukup launched a three-run shot in the sixth to give Belmont a 5-1 lead.

Junior RHP Brett Nagy (Jacksonville/Bolles) (1-1) pitched a complete game seven hitter in the opening game, giving up five runs while striking out four, while sophomore Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) scattered seven hits in the second game, giving up two runs while striking out three in 6.0 innings. Junior Ashley Roque (Jacksonville/Bolles) (0-1) pitched the Dolphins into extra innings, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out two in 3.0 innings of work.

The Dolphins wrap up their series with Belmont tomorrow when they host the Bruins at 1 p.m. at Alexander Brest Field. Junior RHP Dennis Robinson (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) puts his 3-1 record on the line when he faces Belmont senior LHP Alex Renes who is 2-0 on the season.
