Baseball Triumphs in the Bottom of the Ninth Against Western Michigan, 8-7

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU's Larry Best-Berfet (Newark, N.J.) drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth against Western Michigan in an 8-7 win Friday night at Alexander Brest Field. Best-Berfet finished with two hits and two RBI.

JU improves to 5-4 on the season, while Western Michigan evens its record to 1-1. Junior Tom Alford (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin) drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch with the game tied 7-7 in the ninth. Senior Orlando Diaz (Downers Grove, Ill.) entered the game as a pinch runner and scored on Best-Berfet's single up the middle, giving JU its second win in as many nights.

JU sophomore Kyle DeVries (Holland, Mich.) allowed seven hits and three runs in 2.1 innings of work before giving way to freshman reliever Andrew Laughter (Longwood, Fla.) who scattered five hits and four runs while striking out four in 6.0 innings. Senior Patrick Sitkins (Ft. Myers, Fla.) (1-0) earned his first win of the season.

Western Michigan's J.R. Mathes allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out nine in his first start of the season. The Broncos' Bryan French was saddled with the loss (0-1). The Dolphins took its second lead of the game, 7-5, with a three-run seventh inning when freshman Justin Young (Oviedo, Fla.) doubled down the left field line and scored on junior Chris Kelly's (Sarasota, Fla.) single. Alford then doubled in Kelly and scored on Best-Berfet's sac fly.

JU put up four runs in the fourth inning to lead 4-3, after sophomore Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.), junior Jon Galui (Palm Beach, Fla.) and Young each brought a run across the plate.

JU returns to action tomorrow to take on Florida A&M at 4 p.m. at Alexander Brest Field.
