March 13, 2004
ATLANTA, Ga. - Senior Larry Best-Berfet (Newark, N.J.) had a pair of hits and two RBI and sparked a five-run JU comeback in the fifth, but Georgia State came back from three runs down to tie the ballgame in the fifth and added a run late in the sixth to win, 7-6 in game one of a Saturday doubleheader at DeKalb South Field.
JU starter Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) allowed six hits and two earned runs, while striking out one in 4.0 innings and adding a bases-loaded RBI walk in the fifth as a pinch hitter. Freshman Andrew Laughter (Longwood, Fla.) (1-1) was saddled with the loss.
Georgia State rallied from a 6-3 deficit in the fifth when they scored three runs on three hits, tying the game, 6-6. After giving up just one hit to the Dolphins in the sixth, the Panthers added a sac fly to lead 7-6 and retired three JU batters in a row in the seventh to preserve the win.
JU trailed 3-1 in the fifth when Best-Berfet laced a bases-loaded single to center field, scoring freshman Zach Haniff (Bradenton, Fla.) and Chris Kelly (Sarasota, Fla.) to knot it up, 3-3. Freshman Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) singled in a run in the next at-bat, putting JU up 4-3 and chasing Georgia State starter Ben Rulon from the game.
JU loaded the bases after an error on the next at-bat and Dolphin starter Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Artlington Country Day) drew a pinch-hit RBI walk to give JU a 5-3 lead. Senior Orlando Diaz (Downers Grove, Ill.) added one more RBI in the fifth to put the Dolphins up, 6-3.
