Baseball Falls to No. 18 Florida State, 19-3
March 17, 2004
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Sophomore Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and one RBI, but JU could not bite into a manageable three-run deficit in fifth as No. 18 Florida State poured it on late in a 19-3 win Wednesday night at Dick Howser Stadium.
The Dolphins were unable to crack Florida State's two-run 4-2 lead, having opportunities to put runs on the board in the middle innings but stranding a runner on third with one out in the fourth and leaving two men on base in the fifth.
Freshman Shaun Kapples (Jacksonville/Paxon) (0-1) allowed four earned runs on six hits in 5.0 innings in his first collegiate start, recording two strikeouts and giving up five walks.
The Seminoles pulled ahead with a pair of runs in the sixth and two in the seventh before scoring 10 in the eighth.
JU scored its first runs of the ballgame in the third inning when Brickle doubled in senior Clint Hart (Jacksonville/Paxon) from second and senior Larry Best-Berfet (Newark, N.J.) scored from third on a wild pitch to cut Florida State's lead to 4-2.
Florida State took an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the first inning off of four hits and a Dolphin error, but Kapples settled into a groove, retiring eight in a row into the fourth inning before giving up another run in the fifth for a 5-2 Seminole lead.
JU hosts Mercer in a three-game conference series this week, beginning on Friday, March 19 at 6 p.m. and concluding with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 20 beginning at 1 p.m.
