Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU split a pair of pitcher's duels in a doubleheader against Mercer, Saturday, dropping the first game, 2-0, before rebounding with a 3-1 victory in the second game to clinch the conference series at Alexander Brest Field.

Sophomore LHP Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) (1-0) earned a complete game victory in game two, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out two batters in his longest outing of the season. Sophomore LHP Kyle DeVries (Holland, Mich.) (2-3) had an outstanding performance in the first game, allowing just five hits and no earned runs while striking out seven in the loss.

The Dolphins rebounded from a 2-0 loss in the first game when Brickle, also assuming the role of designated hitter, hit a sacrifice fly, scoring freshman Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) from third and giving JU a 1-0 lead. The Dolphins added two more runs in the second when Chris Kelly (Sarasota, Fla.) slapped a RBI single through the left side, scoring freshman Logan James (Clearwater, Fla.) and moving senior Clint Hart (Jacksonville/Paxon) to third, followed by a sacrifice fly from senior Larry Best-Berfet (Newark, N.J.) that made it 3-0 Dolphins.

Mercer's lone run in came off a solo home run by Josh Thompson in the seventh inning. The JU bats were silent in the first game of the doubleheader as Bears' starting pitcher Brian Jones held the Dolphins to just four hits.

JU stranded Jon Galui (Palm Beach, Fla.) on third in the third inning after he reached base on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Rob Hudson (Garden City, Mich.). Best-Berfet grounded out in the next at-bat, moving Galui to third, but Jones induced the next batter into a shallow pop-up for the inning-ending out.

The Dolphins return to action on Tuesday, March 23 when they take on North Florida in the 12th annual Mayor's Cup at UNF at 7 p.m.
