April 9, 2004

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Baseball hosts Stetson in a weekend series beginning tonight at 7 p.m. and concluding with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 10 beginning at 1 p.m.

The series is a rematch of last season's Atlantic Sun Championship when the Dolphins defeated Stetson twice en route to the 2003 conference championship. Stetson is currently second in the conference with a 9-3 record and a 20-13 overall mark, while JU is in the eighth spot with a 5-10 mark in the A-Sun and a 14-19 record overall.

Sophomore first baseman Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) leads the Dolphins with a .434 batting average, while driving in 21 runs. Freshman shortstop Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) is one of the hottest freshmen in the A-Sun with a .354 batting average and eight doubles, while senior third baseman Orlando Diaz (Downers Grove, Ill.) is tops on the team with six home runs and 29 RBI.

Friday night's starter, junior righthander Dennis Robinson (Putnam Valley, N.Y.), is 7-2 on the season, winning six of his last seven starts with a 3.71 ERA and 47 strikeouts. In Saturday's doubleheader, JU will start junior righthander Brett Nagy (Jacksonville/Bolles) (1-3) who is third on the team with 29 strikeouts and Brickle, who will likely see double-duty as a pitcher and designated hitter in game two.

Stetson boasts one of the more dangerous players in the conference, senior Chris Westervelt. Westervelt is among the A-Sun's offensive leaders with a .450 batting average, 13 doubles, eight home runs and 37 RBI. The Hatters also boast one of the top freshmen in the conference, Jon Still, who is hitting .408 with nine doubles and 34 RBI.

Stetson will throw junior righthanders Ryan Heacox (4-1) in Friday night's game, while using junior righty Cy McCuen (5-1) and freshman lefthander Chris Ingoglia (3-1) in Saturday's doubleheader. McCuen leads the team with 37 strikeouts, while Heacox has a squad-low 2.00 ERA in 14 appearances.

All three games of the series will be broadcast live on "The Winner" AM 970 with Cole Pepper handling the play-by-play duties. Rusty Green will provide color commentary for Friday night's game, while former Dolphin great and 2003 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, Chad Hauseman will join Pepper in the booth for Saturday's games. The Dolphin Pregame Show will begin 15 minutes prior to each game.
