Baseball Splits, 13-4 and 9-4 with Stetson For Series Win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Baseball defeated second-place Stetson, 13-4 in game one and lost, 9-4 in game two, but earned the series win on Saturday afternoon scoring a 30 runs in the weekend series at Alexander Brest Field. Senior Larry Best-Berfet (Newark, N.J.) had three hits and two runs in the doubleheader to go along with his 28th stolen base of the season, while sophomore Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) went 1-for-2 with four walks and a pair of runs in two games.

JU improves to 16-20 on the season and 7-11 in the Atlantic Sun, while Stetson drops to 21-15 and 10-5 in the conference.

Brickle (2-1) pitched a complete-game nine-hitter in JU's 13-4 game one victory, allowing four runs while striking out one, while Stetson's Cy McCuen (5-2) recorded the loss, going 1.1 innings while allowing seven hits and eight runs.

Junior Brett Nagy (Jacksonville/Bolles) (1-4) picked up the loss in game two after pitching 4.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs while striking out four. Stetson's Chris Ingoglia (4-1) took the complete-game victory allowing just five hits and four runs.

JU pounded out 12 runs in the first four innings of game one to hold a commanding, 12-0 lead before Stetson put up its first run of the ballgame. Best-Berfet led off the first with a triple and Brickle walked, setting up freshman Pete Clifford's (Jacksonville/Providence) RBI single to make it, 1-0 Dolphins. Alex Jamieson (Sarasota, Fla.) singled to load the bases and senior Orlando Diaz (Downers Grove, Ill.) launched a sacrifice fly to right field, giving JU a 2-0 edge. Freshman Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Englewood) hammered a run-scoring double to left, putting the Dolphins up 3-0, and senior Clint Hart cleared the bases with his fourth home run of the season to give JU its 6-0 lead.

Clifford finished game one going 3-for-3 with three RBI and four runs scored, while Murphy posted his third-straight three hit game, driving in a run and scoring three times. Diaz finished the game with four RBI off of two hits, including his eighth home run of the season, tying him for the league lead.

Best-Berfet led off with a hit in game two and scored on a Jon Galui (Palm Beach, Fla.) single to stake JU to a 1-0 lead. Stetson rebounded with five runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead before JU stemmed the bleeding with a three-run fifth of its own. With two on in the fifth, Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.) singled a run across the plate and Galui drove in his second run of the game to close the gap, 9-3. Clifford added a sacrifice fly late in the inning to make it, 9-4 Stetson.

JU travels to Campbell next weekend with a postseason berth in the balance for a conference series with the Fighting Camels on Friday, April 16 and Saturday, April 17.
