Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Campbell, 2-1 and 3-2
April 17, 2004
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Baseball dropped a doubleheader to Campbell, 2-1 in extra innings and 3-2, Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field despite limiting the opposition to just five runs and two extra base hits in 15 innings. Senior Larry Best-Berfet (Newark, N.J.) led the Dolphins with a pair of hits and a run.
Sophomore Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) pitched 6.2 innings in the first game, allowing six hits and one run before ceding to junior Chris Kelly (Sarasota, Fla.) who mowed down four Campbell batters in 2.0 innings of work, but was charged with a critical error late and gave up the winning run in a 2-1 nine-inning loss.
In the rubber game, sophomore starter Kyle DeVries (Holland, Mich.) gave up three runs off three hits in the first inning but settled down to shut down the Camels thereafter while the JU offense chipped away at the lead with a run in the third and one in the sixth. Unfortunately Campbell closer Tom Rispoli drove the final spike in the road, shutting down the Dolphins in the seventh for his second save of the season.
The Dolphins host Gardner-Webb on Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24 in a critical A-Sun series at Alexander Brest Field. First pitch on Friday is set for 7 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
