Baseball Takes Final Game, 5-1 Over Lipscomb for Series Sweep

NASHVILLE, Fla. - Baseball defeated Lipscomb, 5-1 and swept the Bisons in a must-win Atlantic Sun series Sunday at Dugan Field. Senior Clint Hart (Jacksonville/Paxon) and senior Orlando Diaz (Downers Grove, Ill.) each had a pair of hits while Diaz added a pair of stolen bases. Senior Larry Best-Berfet (Newark, N.J.) had his 33rd and 34th to pull ahead of UCF's Clay Timpner for the conference lead.
Sophomore lefthander Kyle DeVries (Holland, Mich.) (3-7) earned the win, allowing five runs while striking out five in 6.0 innings of work. Junior Brett Nagy (Jacksonville/Bolles) pitched three effective innings of relief, giving up three hits and striking out three for his first save of the season.
Logan James ignited a pivotal three-run fourth when he singled in senior (Orlando Diaz (Downers Grove, Ill.) and junior Alex Jamieson (Sarasota, Fla.), making it 3-0 JU before scoring on senior Larry Best-Berfet's (Newark, N.J.) double, putting the Dolphins up 4-0.
The Dolphins held Lipscomb to just two runs, none of them earned, in 23 innings of play in the three-game series. JU pitchers struck out 17 batters while allowing only 17 hits to the Bisons in the first ever series between the clubs.
Lipscomb scored its only run of the game after a pair of singles and an error cut the Dolphins' lead to 5-1.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the second when Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) reached on an error and scored on Orlando Diaz's (Downers Grove, Ill.) single, giving JU a 1-0 lead.
JU travels to Georgia Southern for a non-conference tilt on Tuesday, May 4 at 6 p.m. before visiting Miami for a three-game set, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
