Baseball Squanders Seventh-Inning Lead in 6-4 Loss to No. 4 Miami
May 7, 2004
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - JU held a 4-2 lead until the seventh when a pair of errors allowed No. 4 Miami to mount a three-run inning and take game one of a three-game series, 6-4 Friday night at Mark Light Stadium. Junior Jon Galui (Palm Beach, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while freshman Zach Haniff (Bradenton, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with a home run and one RBI.
JU led 4-2 with one out in the seventh when senior outfielder Chris Kelly (Sarasota, Fla.) dropped a pop fly, putting men on first and second. Sophomore Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) struck out his career-high sixth batter in the next at-bat but walked the bases loaded with two out. The next batter laced a single to right, bringing two men home and an errant throw by Kelly allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate, giving Miami a 5-4 lead.
Brickle (3-3) pitched 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out six. Miami's J.D. Cockroft (6-3) threw 7.0 innings, giving up eight hits and four runs while striking out four. Reliever Danny Gil picked up his first save of the season.
Haniff bashed his second home run of the season off the scoreboard in right field to make it 1-1 in the third inning. Clint Hart (Jacksonville/Paxon) doubled in Orlando Diaz (Downers Grove, Ill.) and Galui slapped a two-run double down the left field line to give JU a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning.
JU and Miami play game two tomorrow night at 7 p.m. before finishing the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Junior Dennis Robinson (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) will go for his 12th win of the season, which would tie him for top spot in the nation, when JU and Miami square off in game two tomorrow at 7 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard live on "The Winner" AM 970.
