Six Dolphin Pitchers Hold Georgia Southern to Six Hits in 3-1 Win

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior Orlando Diaz (Downer's Grove, Ill.) had a game-winning single in the sixth, while six Dolphin pitchers combined to hold Georgia Southern to six hits and one run as JU defeated the Eagles, 3-1, Wednesday night at Alexander Brest Field. Freshman Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Englewood) went 3-for-4 with one RBI and a spectacular outfield assist, while senior Clint Hart (Jacksonville/Paxon) went 1-for-1 with a pair of walks, a stolen base and one run scored.

Freshman Shaun Kapples (Jacksonville/Paxon) threw 4.0 innings, giving up two hits, striking out one and picking off a pair of baserunners in his second start of the season, while five other Dolphin pitchers held Georgia Southern to four hits and one run through the final five innings.

Diaz sparked a two-run sixth inning with a game-winning single that brought freshman Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) home to make it, 2-0 Dolphins. Murphy singled Diaz home in the next at-bat, making it 3-0. Freshman Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) singled and Hart walked to load the bases, but the Eagles induced a pair of fly balls to end the inning.

Juniors Ashley Roque (Jacksonville/Bolles) and Brett Nagy (Jacksonville/Bolles) were tested in their relief appearances, each facing bases-loaded situations but preserving JU's win. Roque climbed out of a hole in the eighth when the leadoff man reached on an error and stole second before the first out was recorded. Roque hit the next batter but redeemed himself by striking out the three-hole hitter for the second out of the inning. The fifth batter of the inning drew a walk to load the bases but Roque struck out his second batter of the game to end the inning and keep the shutout alive.

Nagy took the mound in the ninth and gave up a leadoff single and a walk. The next batter hit a ball straight at Nagy, who speared it and fired to second for the first out, putting men on the corners. Nagy recorded a strikeout for the second out, but gave up a run-scoring single to make it, 3-1, with men on first and second and otwo out. Nagy walked the bases loaded but induced the final batter into a flyout to record his second save of the season.

Freshman Andrew Laughter (Longwood, Fla.) pitched 1.0 inning of relief in the sixth, striking out one, while senior Pat Sitkins (Ft. Myers, Fla.) threw 1.0 inning in the seventh. Junior Dennis Robinson (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) (12-3) picked up the win, pitching 1.0 inning of relief in the fifth and striking out one.

Hart scored the Dolphins' first run of the ballgame in the third, singling up the middle, stealing second and moving to third and scoring on wild pitches, putting JU up, 1-0.

The Dolphins return to action in their final A-Sun series at Troy State, Friday May 14 and Saturday, May 15. Friday's game begins at 7 p.m. Eastern, while Saturday's doubleheader begins at 2 p.m. Eastern.
