Baseball Downs Bethune-Cookman, 8-5

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU freshman Preston Pehrson (Annapolis, Md.) went 3-for-4 with three RBI and his first career home run in his first career start, while sophomore Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) went 4-for-5 with three runs as the Dolphins downed Bethune-Cookman, 8-5, Thursday night at Alexander Brest Field.
The Dolphins built an 8-1 lead through seven innings thanks to a two-run home run by Pehrson and a pair of doubles by Gronkowski. Dolphin starter Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) (4-4) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing 10 hits and two runs while striking out a pair for the victory.
The Dolphins broke the game open in the second and third innings to build a 5-0 lead when Gronkowski led off the second with a double and Pehrson followed with the first home run of his career, making it, 3-0 Dolphins. In the third, freshman Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Englewood) started a rally with a two-out single followed by an error that put Gronkowski on first and a single by Pehrson that scored Murphy from second.
The Wildcats made a game of it with three runs in the eighth off a bases-clearing double, but junior Chris Kelly (Sarasota, Fla.) took the mound in the ninth and retired the side, striking out one to preserve the win.
Bethune-Cookman starter Mumba Rivera (7-6) took the loss for the Wildcats. JU hosts Bethune-Cookman in game two of a three-game series tomorrow at 7 p.m. Tomorrow night's game will also be head coach Terry Alexander's 1,500th in a Dolphin uniform.
