Baseball Begins Green & Black World Series

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman right-hander Brock Schnabel (Winter Haven, Fla.) allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts in 7.0 innings while sophomore Andrew Laughter (Longwood, Fla.) collected the save to lead the Black team to a 3-2 win over the Green squad in game one of the Green & Black World Series, Thursday evening at Alexander Breast Field. The best of three series, which is a split-squad fall exhibition by the JU baseball program, will continue at Alexander Breast Field on Friday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m. If necessary, game three is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m.

Offensively for the Black squad, freshman Stefan Hertel (Palmetto, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with a run, a double and an RBI while freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Schnabel, who started the contest, did not allow a hit through the first 4.2 innings.

Senior Brett Nagy (Jacksonville/Bolles) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out seven batters in 5.2 innings of work. Sophomore Shaun Kapples (Jacksonville/Paxon) allowed one run on four hits in 3.2 innings of relief. Offensively, sophomores Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Englewood) and Pete Clifford(Jacksonville/Providence) each led the green squad with two hits.
