Jan. 23, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University has been picked sixth in both the 2004 Atlantic Sun Coaches and Media Preseason Baseball Polls, as released by the conference office. UCF was picked to win the league in both polls.
Redshirt junior pitcher Josh Deel (Jacksonville/Wolfson) was voted to the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference Team despite only making five appearances in 2004 before a shoulder injury ended his season. Deel, who was also chosen "Players To Watch" by Baseball America for 2005, tied for the team lead with four saves, while compiling a 4-5 record with a 4.65 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 50.1 innings in 2003.
UCF, which captured the A-Sun regular season title in 2004, returns four A-Sun Preseason All-Conference players in senior outfielder Dee Brown, junior first baseman Ryan Bono, junior catcher Drew Butera and sophomore pitcher Taylor Meier. Florida Atlantic, which earned the NCAA automatic bid after winning the 2004 A-Sun Championship, was chosen second in both polls, while Stetson was chosen third in both polls.
JU returns First-Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference DH/LHP Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day), as well as 2004 A-Sun All-Freshman infielder Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence). The Dolphins also feature junior 1B Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) who was also tabbed "Players To Watch" by Baseball America for 2005.
The Dolphins open the season at Alexander Brest Field against Florida A&M on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m.
