Baseball Defeats Florida A&M, 8-4

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Junior LHP Kyle DeVries (Holland, Mich.) earned the win in his first start while junior first baseman Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) finished 3-for-5 from the plate to lead the JU baseball team to an 8-4 win over Florida A&M, Wednesday evening at Moore-Kittles Field. JU (2-0) won consecutive games to start a season for the second straight year, while Florida A&M fell to 0-7.

DeVries earned the win after allowing one run (none earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out three in 5.0 innings of work. Freshman RHP Matt Davis (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) also contributed 2.0 innings of shutout relief in his Dolphin debut. Sophomore leftfielder Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) and sophomore rightfielder Justin Young (Oviedo, Fla.) also finished with multiple hits.

JU took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning after an RBI single by Gronkowski and a two-run single by freshman shortstop Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.). The Dolphins increased the lead to 5-0 in the second after sophomore centerfielder Doug Fowler (High Point, N.C.) scored on a double-steal and senior catcher Alex Jamieson (Sarasota, Fla.) drove in a run with a single to center.

JU made it an 8-0 contest after an RBI single by Fowler and a two-run base hit to left field by sophomore third baseman Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Englewood).

FAMU got on the board in the bottom of the third when Jermaine Jefferson scored from third after a pickoff throw by Jamieson at first base trickled into right field. The Rattlers would score another run in the eighth and two in the ninth but freshman RHP Brock Schnabel (Winter Haven, Fla.) struck out Allen DeCambra to end the game.

JU will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. as the Dolphins face Bethune-Cookman at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
