Baseball Continues to Roll with 13-4 Win over Bethune-Cookman

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Justin Young (Jacksonville/Oviedo) went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBI while junior LHP Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) earned his first victory of the season to lead JU baseball to a 13-4 win over Bethune-Cookman, Sunday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field. JU (4-0) is off to its best start since the 1997 squad went 8-0, while Bethune-Cookman falls to 0-6 on the year.

Junior Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) and sophomore Zach Haniff (Brandenton, Fla.) also finished with multiple hits in the contest while freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) led the squad with three RBI. Brickle (1-0) earned the win after allowing three runs on six hits while striking out three in 5.0 innings. Junior LHP Aaron Parvey (North Fort Meyers, Fla.) and freshman RHP Brian Ferrell (Jacksonville/Sandalwood) also combined for 2.0 innings of scoreless relief for the Dolphins.

Frank Radziwon (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work. Carlos Picornell and Jimmy Rudolph each led the Wildcats with two hits while Miguel Mercedes drove in two runs. Bethune-Cookman jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second after a two-run homer to left field by Mercedes.

JU answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning when senior Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.) hit a two-run double to center and Lopez drove in a run with a suicide squeeze to third.

The Wildcats evened the scored (3-3) in the top of the third after a sacrifice fly to center by Jon Roberts drove in Picornell.

The Dolphins took their second lead of the contest, 6-3, in the bottom of the inning after a sacrifice fly to left by Haniff and two-run home run to left field by Young. JU increased the lead to 13-3 after scoring seven runs on five hits in the fifth inning.

Bethune-Cookman added another run in the top of the sixth when Rudolph drove in a run with a double down the left-field line.

The Dolphins will next host Georgia Southern at Alexander Brest Field on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m.
