Baseball Handles Villanova, 5-1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior LHP Kyle DeVries (Holland, Mich.) earned his third win of the season while junior Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead JU baseball to a 5-1 win over Villanova, Tuesday evening at Alexander Brest Field. JU (11-5) is off to its best start since going 15-5 in 2000, while Villanova (5-3-1) suffers its third straight loss. The game was delayed an hour and 20 minutes due to a scheduling conflict with the game umpires.

DeVries (3-1) allowed one run on four hits while walking two and striking out two in 6.0 innings of work. Freshman RHP Matt Davis (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) and senior RHP Hunter Davis (Wakulla, Fla.) combined to allow no runs and no hits while striking out five in 3.0 innings of relief. Sophomore Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence), sophomore Doug Fowler (High Point, N.C.) and junior Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) each drove in runs for the Dolphins.

James Baxter (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out four in 5.0 innings. Angelo Petracca finished with multiple hits to lead the Wildcats. Villanova took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning after an RBI base hit by Derek Shunk.

JU answered with two runs in the bottom of the third when Clifford hit an RBI groundout to second and Gronkowski smashed an RBI single through the left side. The Dolphins made it 3-0 in the fourth after Fowler recorded a sacrifice fly to center.

Gronkowski added his third home run of the season in the seventh and Brickle drove in a run with a pinch-hit single in the eighth to end the JU scoring on the evening.

JU will next face Toledo on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Alexander Brest Field.
