Baseball Drops Rubber Game Against Georgia State, 6-4

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) and freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) each finished with two hits but JU baseball fell to Georgia State, 6-4, Sunday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field. Sophomore Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) also extended his current hitting streak to seven games. JU (13-11, 3-6 Atlantic Sun) lost its second consecutive series in conference play while Georgia State (14-7, 7-2) won its third in a row.
Romas Hicks (2-2) earned the win after allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while walking two and striking out five in 7.0 innings.
Senior RHP Brett Nagy (Jacksonville/Bolles/FCCJ) was tagged with the loss (2-3) after allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out four in 5.0 innings. Junior LHP Aaron Parvey (North Fort Meyers, Fla.) and senior RHP Hunter Davis (Wakulla, Fla.) combined for 3.0 innings of hitless relief.
Georgia State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after a two-run home run to left field by Chris Dentler. The Panthers made it 5-0 in the fifth when Rusty Bennett hit a two-run shot to left center and Ryan Sterling drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center. GSU added another run in the sixth after a sacrifice fly to center by Bennett.
JU cut the deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Gronkowski hit an RBI single to right and two runners scored on a fielding error by Dentler at first base. The Dolphins made it 6-4 in the ninth when senior Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.) drove in a run with an RBI single to short.
JU will next face Florida State at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Tuesday, March 22, at 7 p.m. The game will mark the first Div. I game to be held at the facility.
