Baseball Falls to #8 Florida State, 9-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) and freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) each went 2-for-3 but JU baseball fell to No. 8 Florida State, 9-0, Wednesday evening at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. JU falls to 13-12 on the year, while the Seminoles improved to 25-4.
Hunter Jones (4-0) earned the win for Florida State after allowing no runs on six hits while walking none and striking out three in 6.0 innings of work.
Junior LHP Kyle DeVries (Holland, Mich.) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits while walking three and striking out one in 4.1 innings. Senior LHP Patrick Gleason (Merritt Island, Fla.), senior RHP Hunter Davis (Wakulla, Fla.) and freshman Matt Dobbins (Longwood, Fla.) each combined for 2.1 innings of hitless relief and four strikeouts.
FSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third after Brant Peacher drove in a run after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Ruairi O'Connor hit an RBI grounder to third. The Seminoles made it 3-0 in the fifth when Aaron Cheeseman hit an RBI single through the right side. FSU added another run in the sixth after Ryne Jernigan hit an RBI single through the left side.
FSU made it 6-0 in the seventh after a Tony Thomas, Jr. scored on a wild pitch and Cheeseman hit an RBI single to left. The Seminoles added three more runs in the eighth when Daniel Wardell hit a three-run shot over the left-field wall.
JU will travel to Orlando this weekend to face No. 22 UCF for a three-game series. The first game will be live on ESPN 1460 with Joe Block on Friday, March 25, at 6 p.m. The Dolphin pre-game show will begin at 5:45 p.m.
