Florida Atlantic Gets 7-6 Win Over Baseball in the 11th Inning

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) finished with two hits and two RBI to spark a Dolphin rally but Florida Atlantic scored a run in the eighth and a run in the 11th to defeat JU, 7-6, in game one of an Atlantic Sun Conference series Friday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field. JU (14-16, 4-9 A-Sun) is now 0-2 in extra-inning contests, while FAU (17-9, 6-4 A-Sun) won its second consecutive game.

Trailing 6-5 in the eighth, FAU evened the contest when McBryde scored from second base on a single through the right side by Alex Fonseca. In the 11th, Bobby Diliberto led off the inning with a double to the left-field corner and then moved to third on a groundout by Robbie Widlandsky. Brian Lipman followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to give FAU the lead for good.

Mickey Storey (3-1) earned the win after throwing 3.0 innings of scoreless relief with only one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Mike McBryde entered in the 11th for his fourth save of the season.

Senior RHP Hunter Davis (Wakulla, Fla.) was tagged with the loss (0-2) after allowing two run on six hits while walking one and striking out four in 4.1 innings. Freshman RHP Brock Schnabel (Winter Haven, Fla.) hurled 5.1 innings of scoreless relief with six hits allowed and four strikeouts for the no-decision.

Clifford finished 2-for-5 with a double, while junior Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.), sophomore Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Edgewood), freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) and senior Sean McHugh (Port Orange, Fla.) each finished with two hits.

FAU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after scoring two runs in the first and three in the third inning.

JU made it 5-2 in the third after an RBI single up the middle by sophomore Doug Fowler (High Point, N.C.) and an RBI single to right by senior Jon Galui (Palm Beach, Fla.). The Dolphins took a 6-5 lead in the fourth after an RBI single up the middle by Murphy, an RBI groundout by sophomore Justin Young (Oviedo, Fla.) and a two-run double down the right-field line by Clifford.

JU and Florida Atlantic will continue its series on Saturday, April 2, at 6 p.m. The contest can be heard live on 1320, The Patriot with Cole Pepper calling the play-by-play and former Dolphin Jason Ryals providing color commentary. The Dolphin Pre-Game Show will begin at 5:45 p.m.
