Baseball Falls to No. 8 Florida State, 11-4

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Doug Fowler (High Point, N.C.) finished 2-for-3 with two RBI but JU could not hold an early lead as No. 8 Florida State scored 11 runs on 15 hits, en route to an 11-4 win over the Dolphins, Wednesday evening at Dick Howser Stadium. Freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI to also lead the Dolphin offense. JU falls to 16-17 overall while the Seminoles improve to 30-7.
Mark Sauls (4-0) earned the win after allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out three in 6.0 innings.
Sophomore RHP Andrew Laughter (Longwood, Fla.) was tagged with the loss (0-2) after allowing three runs on seven hits with one strikeout in 2.2 innings of work.
JU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning after junior Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) scored from third on a wild pitch by Sauls and Lopez hit an RBI single up the middle.
FSU made it 2-1 in the bottom of the second after an RBI single to right by Bryan Henry. The Seminoles still threatened with runners on first and third with two outs but Laughter got Shane Robinson to fly out to right. The Seminoles took a 3-2 lead in the third when Brant Preacher hit a sacrifice fly to right field and Tony Thomas, Jr. hit a base hit through the left side.
FSU increased the lead to 7-2 in the fifth after a pair of solo home runs by Thomas, Jr. and Henry and a two-run homer to right by Ryne Malone. The Seminoles made it 11-2 in the bottom of the sixth by posting four runs on three hits.
JU cut the deficit to 11-4 in the seventh when Fowler hit a two-run single up the middle.
JU will host Campbell at Alexander Brest Field on Friday, April 8, at 7 p.m.
