Gardner-Webb Powers Past Baseball, 8-4

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Sophomore Daniel Murphy (Jacksonville/Edgewood) finished with two hits and freshman Matt Dobbins (Longwood, Fla.) drove in a season-high two runs, but Gardner-Webb used three solo home runs to defeat JU baseball, 8-4, Friday afternoon at Varsity Field. JU falls to 17-21 overall and 7-12 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, while Gardner-Webb improves to 14-20, 4-9.
Zach Ward (6-4) earned the complete-game victory after allowing four runs (one earned) on 10 hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Freshman Matt Davis (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) was tagged with the loss in his first-career start (2-2) after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work. Freshman Brock Schabel (Winter Haven, Fla.) had his scoreless inning streak ended at 11.2.
Gardner-Webb jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Matt Maloney hit a solo home run over the left-field wall. The Bulldogs made it 3-0 in the third after Ryan Sickles hit a sacrifice fly to right and Blake Lalli hit an RBI double down the left-field line.
JU tied the contest, 3-3, in the top of the fourth when junior Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) hit an RBI single through the right side and Dobbins hit a two-run double to left field.
The Bulldogs took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Maloney led off with a triple to right center and later scored on a base hit bunt to first by Nate MacDonald.
The Dolphins evened the contest, 4-4, in the top of the sixth when Brickle scored from third on a passed ball.
GWU made it 6-4 in the bottom of the six when Maloney hit his second home run of the contest to left and Jeremy McCann hit a solo shot to dead center. The Bulldogs increased their lead to 8-4 when Jay McConnell and MacDonald each hit RBI singles to center.
JU and Gardner-Webb will complete its three-game set with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
