Baseball Rallies to Win Game One, 12-7, Over Lipscomb

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) finished 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBI and junior Gordie Gronkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to key a six-run rally in the bottom of the fourth to lead JU baseball to a 12-7 win over Lipscomb in game one of a doubleheader, Saturday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field. JU (19-23, 9-13 Atlantic Sun) pounded out 12 runs on 15 hits, while Lipscomb (18-22, 4-15 Atlantic Sun) dropped its fifth consecutive contest to the Dolphins.

Freshman Brock Schnabel (Winter Haven, Fla.) earned the win (1-1) after allowing two runs on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts in a career-high 7.2 innings of work. Freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) also finished with three hits and two RBI to lead the squad.

Zach Duncan (4-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. Trailing 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth, JU rallied for six runs on five hits to take a 9-7 lead. Clifford started the scoring with a bases clearing three-run double off the right-center wall. Gronkowski followed with an RBI single through the left side, senior Jon Galui (West Palm Beach, Fla.) hit an RBI single to right and Lopez drew a bases-loaded walk.

Lipscomb took an early 5-0 lead in the first inning when Nathan Sensing hit an RBI double to left center and Ryan Mitchell hit a three-run home run to left field.

JU made it 5-2 in the bottom of the second when Lopez hit and RBI single down the right-field line and James drove in a run with a single up the middle.

The Bisons increased the lead to 7-2 in the third after a solo homer to left by Mitchell and an RBI groundout to short by Preston Embrey.

The Dolphins added another run in the bottom of the third when Gronkowski hit a lined shot over the left-center wall. For Gronkowski, it was his team-leading sixth home run of the season.

JU made it 10-7 in the bottom of the fifth when Clifford hit a towering solo shot off the top of the scoreboard in right field.

JU and Lipscomb will complete its three-game set with game two of a doubleheader.
