Three-Run First Inning Propels Stetson to 4-2 Win Over Baseball

DeLAND, Fla. - Freshman Matt Lopez (Oviedo, Fla.) finished a career-high 4-for-4 from the plate and sophomore Pete Clifford (Jacksonville/Providence) added two hits but the Dolphins left 11 runners on base as JU baseball fell to Stetson, 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Melching Field. JU falls to 21-26 overall and 11-116 in the Atlantic Sun, while Stetson improves to 27-18, 14-10.
Nathan Nery (3-2) earned the win after allowing two runs on 10 hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 7.1 innings. Robbie Elsemiller hurled 1.2 innings of relief to notch his third save of the year.
Junior LHP Donald Brickle (Jacksonville/Arlington Country Day) was tagged with the loss (2-4) after allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout in a career-high 7.2 innings of work.
Stetson jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning after a two-run triple to left-center field by John Destefano, followed by an RBI single through the left side by Jon Still, with two outs.
JU cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fourth when Clifford hit an RBI single down the left-field line and would later score on a wild pitch by Nery.
The Hatter added another run in the seventh when David Gollinger hit a solo home run over the right-center wall.
The Dolphins left 11 runners on base, including eight in scoring position, while out hitting the Hatters (13-8).
