Baseball Signs D.J. Ackley to National Letter of Intent

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU baseball team announced the signing of 6-foot-1 right-handed pitcher D.J. Ackley (Lake Mary, Fla.) of Daytona Beach Community College to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Terry Alexander announced today. Ackley joins shortstop Anthony Bernazard (Princeton, N.J.), left-handed pitcher Garrett Dunlap (Phoenix, Ariz.), shortstop/right-handed pitcher Kyle Miller (Jacksonville/Terry Parker), catcher Brad Simmons (Jacksonville/Terry Parker) and first baseman/outfielder Alex Martinez (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) of Lakeland High School, as part of the Dolphins' 2005-06 recruiting class.

Ackley earned First-Team All-Mid-Florida Conference accolades and Daytona Beach CC Pitcher-of-the-Year honors after leading the Falcons to a 2005 Mid-Florida title with a 6-0 conference record. At Lake Mary High School, he earned second-team all-state and First-Team All-Seminole Athletic Conference honors as a senior after going 8-0 with an 0.65 ERA. As a junior, he earned honorable mention all-state and first-team all-conference accolades after finishing with a 8-0 record and a 0.56 ERA. In two years on the junior varsity squad, he posted a 15-1 record. Ackley also led his American Legion Post 53 squad to a state championship in 2002.

"D.J. has been successful at every level of his pitching career," said Alexander, who is in his 15th season of running the Dolphin program. "His big-game experience and tremendous work ethic will have a major impact on our pitching staff next season."

The Dolphins complete a four-game season series against No. 11 Florida State at Mike Martin Field on Tuesday, May 17 at 6 p.m.
