Jan. 23, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
After winning its first Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season title in 2006, the JU baseball team has been picked to repeat in 2007 according to the Atlantic Sun Conference coaches poll, as released Tuesday.
Junior pitcher Matt Dobbins and senior outfielder Pete Clifford were each voted to the A-Sun preseason All-Conference team, with Dobbins being the only player on the 15-man squad to be a unanimous selection. Mercer senior catcher Josh Thompson was selected as the preseason "Player of the Year."
JU, which was tied with Stetson for the top spot in the poll with 91 points, received five first place votes from the conference head coaches while the Hatters garnered only four votes. Stetson, which earned an NCAA Regional bid after winning the 2006 A-Sun Tournament, was chosen to repeat as tournament champions.
Mercer (80), which received one first-place vote, North Florida (72) and East Tennessee State (60) rounded out the top five spots in the conference. Kennesaw State (42), Belmont (41), Campbell (27), Gardner-Webb (25) and Lipscomb (21) made up the bottom half of the poll.
The Dolphins open the season at Florida A&M on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m.
