Jan. 30, 2007
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Senior first baseman Ryan McArdle went 2-for-4 with a three-run double while junior reliever Justin Young notched his first save of the season to lead the JU baseball team to a 6-3 over Florida A&M, Tuesday afternoon at Moore-Kittle Field in the 2007 season opener.
Junior Matt Gardner (1-0) earned the win in his Dolphin debut after hurling 1.1 innings of hitless relief. Young notched his first save after striking out two batters in a perfect ninth inning. Senior D.J. Ackley also hurled 2.0 innings of scoreless relief.
Cirilo Manego (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits with five strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. Anthony Mazzeo led the Rattlers by going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
"It wasn't a pretty game but we came away with the win," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "It was nice to see the new guys getting into the mix to help us kick off the season."
JU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when senior third baseman Thomas LePage drove in McCallister from second base with a single to right field. McCallister led off the inning with a single through the right side and then advanced to second on an error before LePage followed with a single to right.
FAMU evened the score with a run in the bottom of the second after a sacrifice fly to right field by Darryl Evans. Anthony Mazzeo led off the inning with a single up the middle and then moved to second after a walk to Jared Grace. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by junior Matt Dobbins, before Evans hit a drive to right with one out.
JU opened a 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth when Clifford hit an RBI double to left center and McArdle hit a three-run double to left center. With one out, junior center fielder Kevin Ferreira drew a walk and then scored from first on an RBI double to left center by Clifford. Clifford looped a drive away from a diving Evans to allow Ferreira to score from first base.
After McCallister reached base on a fielding error by third baseman Peter Gustella, LePage drew a walk from reliever Ben Baylor to load the bases. McArdle followed with a bases-clearing drive to left center field.
The Rattlers cut the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth after an RBI double by Mazzeo and a run scoring wild pitch.
The Dolphins made it 6-3 in the top of the eighth inning when senior catcher Donnie Vickers scored on a throwing error by Baylor on a failed pick-off attempt. After Vickers hit a single to second with one out, he attempted to steal second and Baylor made a move to first to start a pick-off. First baseman David James failed to notice the play and the throw went into right field, allowing Vickers to score.
JU will open up its home schedule at Alexander Brest Field against Bethune-Cookman on Friday at 4 p.m.
