Baseball holds off Florida A&M, 9-6

JACKCSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior right fielder Mike McCallister's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth gave the Dolphins the lead for good as the JU baseball team captured the season series sweep over Florida A&M with a 9-6 win, Wednesday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field.
Senior Justin Young (1-0) tallied the win in relief after striking out two batters in two shut out innings of relief. In his Dolphin debut, freshman Carson Andrew did not allow a run 2 1/3 innings while striking out three batters. Offensively, McCallister went 3-for-5 with two RBI while senior catcher Donnie Vickers also finished with multiple hits.
Chad Smith (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) with three walks and three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. Darryl Evans and Stanley Gnat each finished with three hits to lead the offense.
"We had a battle on our hands tonight but we came away with the win," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "We need to show improvement though as we progress through our schedule."
JU took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second when junior third baseman Ben Kerr hit a sacrifice fly to center and freshman designated hitter Alex Martinez hit an RBI triple to left center before scoring on an error. Junior shortstop Matt Lopez drew a lead-off walk before Vickers followed with a single to left center. Kerr drove in the first run with a long drive to right center to score Lopez from third. In the next at-bat, Martinez drove a ball to the wall for a bases clearing triple and then scored from third on a failed pick-off attempt by Rattler catcher Elvin Millan.
The Dolphins pushed the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third when senior first baseman Ryan McArdle hit a solo shot over the right center wall with two outs. For McArdle, it was his team-leading second home run of the year, and his second in as many games.
The Rattlers evened the contest, 4-4, with four runs on three hits in the top of the fourth inning. Stanley Gnat drove in two runs with a bouncing double over the third baseman to drive in two runs and Adam Gordon followed with an RBI single to right field. FAMU threatened with one out and the bases loaded but Brown entered the game and struck out consecutive batters to end the inning.
FAMU took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth when Gnat drove in a run with an RBI groundout to third base.
JU took a 6-5 advantage in the bottom of the sixth when Martinez drove in Lopez with a sacrifice fly to deep left and Vickers scored on a wild pitch Chad Smith. Lopez led off the inning with a single and then advanced to third after Darryl Evans booted the ball in center field after a single by Vickers. With one out, Martinez hit the first pitch to the wall in left to score Lopez and Vickers would follow on the wild pitch.
The Rattlers evened up the game, 6-6, in the top of the seventh when Millan scored from third after a fielding error at third base.
With the game still tied in the bottom of the eighth, the Dolphins put up three runs on two hits to put the game away. With the bases loaded and two outs, McCallister pulled a ball through the left side to score two runs. After McArdle walked to reload the bases, Lopez drove in a run with an RBI walk.
JU will host Georgia Southern at Alexander Brest Field next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
