JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior outfielder Pete Clifford broke out of his early slump by going 3-for-5 with two doubles but Georgia Southern took advantage of Dolphin miscues as the JU baseball team fell to the Eagles, 10-6, Tuesday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field.

"We are trying to get our guys hitting on all cylinders offensively but it just has not happened so far," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Defensively, our mistakes may not have given up many runs, but they gave them momentum and forced us to throw more pitches."

John Ducey (1-0) earned the win after allowing two runs on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts in six innings of work. Chris Shehan led the Eagles by going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI.

Junior Matt Gardner (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts in five innings. Along with Clifford, freshman first baseman Alex Martinez went 2-for-5 with a double to finish with multiple hits.

Trailing 10-2 heading in the bottom of the ninth, the Dolphins made things interesting by scoring four runs on four hits but Eagles' closer Kyle Kamppi recorded the final out with runners on first and second.

Junior shortstop Matt Lopez led off the inning with a single to right and then advanced to second on a fielding error by Shehan at third. Freshman Chuck Opachich drove in a run with an RBI single up the middle in his first collegiate at-bat and then senior outfielder Mike McCallister drove in a run with a double down the left-field line. Senior Ryan McArdle drove in two more runs with a single to left but the Dolphins ran out of magic.

GSU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Shehan hit a two-run homer over the left field wall on a 3-1 count.

JU tied the contest, 2-2, in the bottom of the third when senior second baseman Logan James hit an RBI grounder back at the mound and Clifford drove in a run with a double to left center.

Lopez was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and sophomore catcher Brad Simmons followed with a single through the right side. After junior center fielder John Tiner moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt, James line a 3-1 pitch off of Ducey's glove to drive in Lopez. In the next at-bat, Clifford cleared the bases with a slicing liner to the left-field wall.

The Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth after taking advantage of two Dolphin errors with an RBI single to right by Chris Hollis.

GSU pushed the advantage to 4-2 in the top of the sixth when Brian Pierce hit a solo shot off the top of the left-field wall with two outs.

The Eagles made it 8-2 in the top of the seventh when the Eagles put five hits while scoring four runs with two outs. GSU pushed the lead to 9-2 in the top of the eighth when Benedict drove in Miller from third with a foul fly to third base. GSU added a final run in the top of the ninth when Hollis hit a sacrifice fly to left field.

JU will host a home-and-home series with USF beginning at Alexander Brest Field on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
