Baseball defeats La Salle in game two, 6-2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Carson Andrew won his second game of the year and senior left fielder Pete Clifford went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI to lead the JU baseball team to a 6-2 win over La Salle in seven innings, Saturday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader at Alexander Brest Field.

JU (6-10) snapped its four-game slide with five runs on five hits in the fifth inning to blow the game open. La Salle (4-3) rallied for two run in the top of the sixth but finished the game with only seven hits.

Andrew (2-0) won his second decision after allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts in a season-high six innings of work. Junior David Yates also hurled a scoreless seventh in relief.

Along with Clifford, who extended his hitting streak to six games, senior first baseman Thomas LePage went 2-for-3 with an RBI to finish the day a combined 5-for-8 on the afternoon, ending a 4-for-30 slump to start the year.

"It's nice to bounce back from the first game and get a win but it still leaves a bad taste in your mouth," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Hopefully this game gets us going so we can end this series on a positive note."

TJ Chism (0-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts in four innings. Kevin Jones finished with two hits and John Rickards drove in two runs to lead the Explorers.

The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when senior right fielder Mike McCallister scored from third on a suicide squeeze by senior catcher Donnie Vickers. McCallister hit a laser off of La Salle starter TJ Prism to lead off the inning and then moved to third on a single to left by senior first baseman Thomas LePage. On a 0-1 pitch, Vickers laid down a bunt towards first base as McCallister took off on the pitch.

JU made it 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth when senior left fielder Pete Clifford laced a two-run single through the right side, senior designated hitter Ryan McArdle hit an RBI single up the middle, LePage hit an RBI single to left and junior third baseman Benn Kerr hit a sacrifice fly to center.

Senior second baseman Logan James led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a base hit bunt to second. Junior center fielder Kevin Ferreira loaded the bases with a bunt single towards the mound before Clifford pulled a 1-2 pitch through the right side. With one out, McArdle hit a shot back up the middle to score Ferreira and LePage followed with a shot to left center to drive in Clifford. After a walk to Vickers, Kerr drove in McArdle with a deep drive to center.

La Salle cut the deficit to 6-2 in the top of the sixth when John Rickards hit a two-run single to left field with two outs.

JU and La Salle will conclude its four-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
