Baseball drops another heartbreaker, 10-5, to La Salle

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior second baseman Logan James gave the Dolphins a 5-4 lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth but the JU baseball team gave up five runs in the top of the ninth to fall to La Salle, 10-5, Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at Alexander Brest Field.

JU (5-10) dropped its fourth-straight game and the third contest while holding the lead in the final innings. La Salle (4-2) rallied for six runs on four hits while also taking advantage of an error in the top of the ninth.

Senior Justin Young (1-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs (two earned) on nine hits with four walks and six strikeouts in a career-high 8 1/3 innings. Senior first baseman Thomas LePage led the Dolphin offense by going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Kelly Elkind (1-0) earned the win despite allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts in two innings of relief. Davis Hewett went 3-for-5 with thee RBI to lead the Explorers.

La Salle took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when John Rickards hit an RBI single to left field.

JU evened the contest in the bottom of the first when senior designated hitter Ryan McArdle drove in Opachich from third with a sacrifice fly to right field. Opachich led off the inning with a single to short and then moved to second when sophomore catcher Brad Simmons was hit by a pitch. Both runners stole a base before McArdle hit a drive to right field.

The Explorers made it 3-1 in the top of the fourth when Mike Dertouzos scored from third on a throwing error and Justin Handler hit an RBI grounder to second.

The Dolphins evened the contest, 3-3, after an RBI double by senior first baseman Thomas LePage and an RBI single to second by junior center fielder Kevin Ferreira. Clifford led off the inning with a double to left center and then scored on a double down the first-base line by LePage. After moving to third on a bunt by junior shortstop Matt Lopez, Ferreira laced a grounder up the middle to score LePage from third.

La Salle took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth when Davis Hewett hit an RBI single up the middle with two outs.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, JU took a 5-4 lead after an RBI single through the left side by senior first baseman Thomas LePage and an RBI single to right by James. With one out, senior designated hitter Ryan McArdle doubled to the left-field corner and was replaced by junior Stewart Kelly. LePage followed with a single to tie the game. With two outs, James pulled a single to right to put the Dolphins ahead.

JU and La Salle will play a seven-inning contest in the second game of the doubleheader.
