Baseball handles La Salle, 14-4

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In a reversal of fortune, the Dolphins rallied from an early deficit and took advantage of seven La Salle errors as the JU baseball team won back-to-back games with a 14-4 decision over the Explorers, Sunday afternoon at Alexander Brest Field.
JU (7-10) rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the sixth before scoring eight runs in the eighth. La Salle (4-4) managed only six hits while the Explorer pitching staff gave up 18 hits with six walks, three hits batsmen and two wild pitches.
"We are starting to get things rolling right now and I'm proud of the way we have bounced back from our first two games," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "We have a tough week coming up so we need to keep the momentum going."
Freshman Glenn Witkowski (1-2) earned his first collegiate win after allowing only two hits with two walks and strikeout in 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Senior left fielder Pete Clifford led the Dolphin offense by going 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and two RBI to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Senior right fielder Mike McCallister and junior center fielder Kevin Ferreira each added three hits.
Brian Kern (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in 1/3 inning of relief. Rich Prall led the Explorers with three hits.
JU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Pete Clifford hit an RBI triple to left center. Junior center fielder Kevin Ferreira led off the inning with a double to center before Clifford cleared the bases with a drive over the head of David Hewett in left field.
La Salle took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when Prall hit an RBI single to left and Hewett drove in a run with a fielder's choice to second.
The Dolphins evened the game in the bottom of the fourth when Kerr hit an RBI single to right field. James led off the inning with a single to short and then advanced to third on consecutive throwing errors by Gerhart on pick off attempts.
The Explorers made it 4-2 in the top of the sixth when John Malloy hit a two-run single down the left-field line with two outs.
JU took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Ferreira hit an RBI single to left field, Clifford hit an RBI double into the left-field corner and McCallister hit a two-run double of the left-center wall.
Junior third baseman Ben Kerr led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior shortstop Matt Lopez. After a wild pitch, Ferreira followed with a looper to left field. In the next at-bat, sophomore catcher Brad Simmons hit a single up the middle before Clifford scored Ferreira from second with a slicer into the corner. With two outs, McCallister cleared the bases with a line drive off the wall.
The Dolphins blew the contest open after scoring eight runs on five hits while also taking advantage of three errors by the Explorers. Senior first baseman Ryan McArdle hit a two-run single, McCallister hit an RBI single through the left side, Lopez drove in a run with a single to third, Ferreira hit an RBI fielder's choice to second and Simmons hit a two-run homer to right center.
