Baseball pounds Campbell, 13-3, in game two

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior left fielder Pete Clifford paced the Dolphins with a grand slam in the third inning and sophomore Tim Brown closed things out to lead the JU baseball team to a 13-3 win over Campbell, Friday evening in game two of a doubleheader at Alexander Brest Field.
JU (20-17, 5-6) tallied its first A-Sun series win of the season after scoring 13 runs on 12 hits. In the doubleheader, the Dolphins scored 24 run on pounded out 26 hits.
Campbell (7-26, 2-9) lost its fourth consecutive conference series after producing only four runs in two games.
Junior Matt Gardner (4-2) earned the win after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts in five innings. Sophomore Tim Brown notched his first save of the season after hurling four innings of scoreless relief.
Clifford, who tallied his team leading sixth home run, also finished with a game-high five RBI. Junior center fielder Kevin Ferreira and senior designated hitter Thomas LePage each finished 3-for-4 to lead the squad. The duo combined to go 13-for-16 in the doubleheader.
Brandon Scott (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in three innings. Ryan Hamme led the Camels by going 2-for-4 f
"This is the kind of day that we have needed," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "We get our first series win, our offense gets going and we got some great pitching performances. The fact that we played some pretty quick games went over really well for the finale tomorrow."
After two scoreless innings, the Dolphins broke things open with six runs on five hits in the bottom of the third. Clifford crushed a grand slam to right field, LePage hit an RBI double to left and senior first baseman Ryan McArdle hit an RBI single up the middle.
With one out, junior shortstop Matt Lopez and senior second baseman Logan James each drew walks before advancing a base on a single to left by junior center fielder Kevin Ferreira. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Clifford pulled a 3-2 pitch off the scoreboard in right field. Senior right fielder Mike McCallister followed with a double to right center before scoring on a double down the third-base line by LePage. In the next at-bat, McArdle hit a ball back up the middle to score LePage.
Campbell cut the deficit to 6-1 in the top of the fourth when Mike Causey hit an RBI single to left field.
JU increased the lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth when freshman third baseman Chuck Opachich hit a sacrifice fly to center. With two outs, James drew a walk and moved to third on a single to right by Ferreira. Opachich followed with a high drive to right center to plate James.
The Camels cut the lead to 7-3 in the top of the fifth when Todd Matthews hit a two-run home run down the left-field line.
The Dolphins made it 13-3 in the bottom of the eighth when Lopez hit a two-run single to left, Ferreira drew a bases loaded walk, Opachich drove in a run with a single through the right side, Clifford drove in a run with a fielder's choice to second and McCallister hit a sacrifice fly to center.
The Dolphins and Campbell will complete the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Alexander Brest Field. The contest can be heard live on WZNZ, ESPN-1460 with Barry Milligan calling all the action. The Dolphin Pre-Game Show will air at 12:45 p.m.
